A few years back, a cute little movie called Cars endeared itself to America with it’s charming storyline set in a town along historic Route 66. The little town of Radiator Springs isn’t so different from some of the cute little towns that line Southwest Michigan’s own Route 66.
Red Arrow Highway is a section of the old US 12 that runs parallel to Lake Michigan for a section. Old US 12 is a trunkline highway that runs across the country from Aberdeen, Washington to Detroit, Michigan. In Michigan, US 12’s route changes names a multitude of times, but spans 220 miles from New Buffalo to Detroit. A more efficient means of travel would be Interstate 94, but then you would miss so many gems along the way.
Last night, the kids and I headed to a little drive in on Red Arrow Highway called Mikey’s.
With the iPads left at home, we talked about how little drive -ins were popular in the 50’s and 60’s and how I remember going to Dog n Suds as a kid to get hotdogs and root beer in frosty glasses. It was a trip down memory lane for Mom, interesting and tasty for the kids and time well spent and a memory made.
.If you are headed to or through Southwest Michigan, stop in and visit the crew at Mikey’s Drive In, take a step back in time and enjoy good eats!
Watch for more hot spots along Red Arrow Highway, Southwest Michigan’s very own Route 66.
