Permission to Survive

Whew – what a week!  Welcome, Sunday! An even bigger week looms on the horizon.  This week is Southwest Michigan’s Berrien County Youth Fair! The kids have been busy all week preparing their exhibitor projects.

I recently read a Facebook post by a frazzled teacher friend who said she just needed permission to not be perfect and to survive.  This is a perfect time to address self care.  So often, those who care for others fail to take their own advice. When life is a whirlwind, as it frequently is during a busy school week (like the first week – when you are still adjusting to the new pace of your life) it is important to take care of you.  You are of no use to your family, your colleagues, your students or yourself if you are stressed and frazzled.  It isn’t that we don’t know this – we tend to think of ourselves as rocks that are there for others, but we must remember that we owe this same compassion to ourselves.

So today – I am taking a break.  I am giving myself permission (and you too) to read a book, soak in the hot tub, do my nails, drink a glass of wine, and take care of me.  Remember, as the school year takes off and we embrace the frenzy of fall (the busiest, but my FAVORITE time of year)… you have permission to unwind and take care of you. Take your own advice.  Even superheroes need a day to unwind.
